Though I lost winter
by Troy Eggleston

hough I lost winter
I have not lost faith
in reindeer or fakes
in safety on frozen lakes
in blended whisky
and how it warms the worst of thieves
in prayer on bended knees
in flickering lights
in a prisoner's right
to kiss their loved ones goodnight
in the pattern of a locked shadow
in its thick coalish suit
waiting for summer to arrive,
for its yellow and light blues
its porch and song
and though I lost winter
it won't be long
till the children run through the sprinklers
as they spit on the lawn.
